Q4 Mid-Term Deadline
Today is the beginning of the last stretch of Q4 and essentially the end of the 2015-16 school year. You have the next 30 minutes to do the following:

1. Turn in your Tabloid size carton layout in PDF format. Remember that each Team member is responsible for one of the specified designs; one using an image and the other a pattern
Label your design as follows:

     Product_NAME_Image                    or                      Product_NAME_Pattern

2. Turn in both letter size artboards containing your label and front view of your 3D Carton and Bottle
Save these on the same PDF (w/2 pages) and title it as follows:

                      Product_NAME_Image_3D
                   or         Product_NAME_Pattern_3D

3. Turn these in for print on the server in the correct folder.

4. Complete the Partner Evaluation Form found in your Google Classroom. This form is to be filled out individually and not meant to be shared.

Package Design...is a BIG Deal
and can actually sell a product!

This project will follow a Lynda.com tutorial to set the boundaries and guide us in a carton and label design for a multi-vitamin product. BUT, skill in hand we must now extend it make this project original. Your final design will go to print and the package constructed in 3D. Following the guidelines set by the industry and outlined in this tutorial is priority.

To begin, we will work in Teams of two. You will need to come up with your own supplement, original artwork, and write the copy. The final piece will need two layouts combining the same elements you create together; one with an image and the other using a pattern.

To further assist you in the creative process and keep your packaging original we will be "supplementing" the process with two other projects, one based on shape and the other line. The idea is that we can step outside and work on these when the weather is nice. You will need to include an element from these projects in your package design in some way.

BUT
You have to create the product, the art AND write the copy

Each package design must include:

  • 4 panels, glue flaps, and dust flaps
  • 2 layouts: one w/ an image the other w/ a pattern
  • color palette, type palette, and codes for print
  • Supplement Facts and Barcode (QR Code extra)
  • Your original art
  • Logo
  • Symbols
  • 3D mock up
  • Completed final package folded and in 3D

Magazine Cover Challenge

Essential Question:

What makes an awesome magazine cover?

Compare these two covers and identify 3 elements that characterize a great cover.

Your Job

Create a self-portrait in the form of a magazine cover. The cover image and design must reinforce your brand and the story lines based around your interests.

Your work will be evaluated on:

1. Unity
How did you achieve a common theme using type styles, images, color, and type?
Do all the parts work together?

2. Readability
Can you read the type against the background? Is the type style readable?
Are the sentences too long? Are the titles descriptive enough? Does the type size signify importance? Did you use C.A.R.P.?

3. Branding
Do the elements support your brand? Is the photo eye catching? Is it too busy?

4. Craftsmanship
Does it look professional?

5. Layout
How did you arrange all the key elements? What alignment did you use for the type? Is the title over the picture or a background? Did you include all the required key elements?
Is it easy to read or confusing?

Key Elements
Your cover must include:
1. Background
2. Cover Photo
3. Title (Masthead)
4. Several Story Lines
5. Issue Date

The Process
This semester is all about process. Finding and practicing a workflow will make you better and faster. Follow these 5 steps and document each for this project.

1. Inspiration - Seek out what inspires you. Document and model it.
2. Plan - A, B, and C. Sketch out your ideas using grid templates for layouts. Have 3 thumbnails and 6 unique story lines. Think Headlines, Captions, Quotes, or any hook that tries to get the reader to open the magazine.
3. Get feedback.
4. Gather Elements - Typography, story lines, color palette, images into one folder.
5. Assemble in InDesign paying attention to details like Alignment and Color Harmony.

What elements constitute an awesome poster design?

To answer this essential question we will examine the works of Saul Bass, a master at movie poster design, to identify several common aspects. These common elements will frame the creative boundaries for our next project: remake a poster for a contemporary movie using the boundaries as described in your class.

Examples Creative Boundaries:
1. Tells the understory or introduces a character
2. Stays within the specified number of colors
3. Has a customized font
4. Movie meets requirement
5. Is in the style of Saul Bass

Your 2015 Semester FINAL

________________________________________________

PART A

Design Your Own Business Card

The familiar size used in the U.S. is 3 1/2 by 2 inches. But you don't have to limit yourself to a standard size. MOO Cards are known for their mini, or chewing-gum strip cards. They and other online digital printing services also offer square business cards. The biggest advantage of a non-traditional size is that it stands out.
Go to Moo
Find a 2 professional layouts that inspire your own ideas and to use as a roadmap for your business cards, one that fits your logo and brand.
Layout 1:
Must use a photograph with text over it on one side
Layout 2:
Must have an original pattern on one side

Both cards must include your logo

Open the appropriate Adobe program to make your cards from scratch using the pre-made design only as inspiration. Place your contact information on one side along with your area of expertise and prepare the card for print.

PART B

Design Your Own Inspirational Postcard

Create a postcard with an inspirational quote on one side and a postage ready backside. Again, use Moo for inspiration if needed.

TURN IN

You will need to turn in your final pieces in 3 places.

1. The Server-this one goes to print so make sure it is right. Find the appropriate hour and card type inside.

2. Google Classroom-I need the source files here.

3. Blogger-publish and write a reflective statement that not only talks about the projects and your process but ALSO helps tell your story. Be sure to include the cards you used as inspiration and your thumbnail sketches.

Masks, Typography, and More Masks!!

We practiced using several different ways to use a mask in Photoshop (Clipping, Layer, and Radial Blur)
These were only a few examples so please feel free to explore the topic further on your own to extend that learning (This could also be turned into a "How To Tutorial")

For this Post Include:
  • 2 Postcards : Present each with some synopsis of your process–please make this interesting and not a list of steps. Include problems you solved, things you learned, and what else you want to explore further.

________________________________________________

Painting in Photoshop is FUN!

Show Off Your Original Artwork w/ Written Reflection
Talk about your process beginning with your ideas about what to do, set up for workspace, using what you learned, and ending with file management.
Highlight at least 3 different ways you used the mixer brush.

Possible Focus Vocabulary:
  • customizing mixer brush settings
  • cleaning the brush
  • mixing the colors
  • creating a custom brush preset
  • using wet and dry brushes to blend color

ARTICLE REVIEW
Rules! Who Needs Them Anyway?
Talk about rules in terms of Graphic Design and reference the article we read in class. Do we need them and why or why not. How do they apply to you?

Personal Logo Project
Designing your own logo is one of the most important things you will do. It is the first step toward building your professional brand and should be used to communicate a lot about what type of designer/videographer/animator you are.
You will document and present the entire process as a project review. Do your own Google search but here are a few awesome examples you could model for your final Blog Post.

Some Examples of Process:

Starting with the BASICS
A LOGO can have one or more of these elements:
2. Icon/Shape
3. and/or a Monogram

Define what your core message is by making a list of adjectives or keywords that you feel define or would like to define you, your brand, and or your business. For example, a graphic designer is creative and a computer programmer is technical. You can also add the 5 strengths you identified. Narrow this list down to 4 and use them the main essence that your logo will convey. This list will help keep you on track throughout this process.
Watch
Choosing the Right Typeface-and aligning your brand of "you" to the right keywords is a start.
Make
At least 2 artboards. 1 for your keywords and 1 to explore variables (all caps, bold, etc..)
This may seem daunting at first but the time you put in on the front end will pay off on future projects by having a system in place to explore typefaces you a familiar with and save you mucho time. Save this one in your Design Vault. ____________________________________

Logo Design Process

Document your process in a similar way as one of the approved examples (see above or do your own Google search). You will be expected to present this project in a similar manner as the seniors when they present one of their projects at the senior show this spring. You will have 3-5 minutes and will present from your Blogger site so make it look the part.

STEP 1
Creative Brief:
Interview each other using a creative brief. Even though you will be doing your own logo, having another student do the interview not only gives them and you practice but can help you determine aspects of your brand that will come in handy down the road. Here some examples that are tailored for logo design BUT please do your own Google search. Make a list of 10 questions that you think will help move your client's project forward before doing the interview. SAVE this as part of your process AND for future use.

STEP 2
Research:
Make a mood board of competitor logos for the industry to get ideas but also to stand out. Make a list of keywords that describe the core values of your brand.
Narrow those down to 4.
Determine the meanings, symbolism, and personality for the various colors, shapes, and fonts to make sure they match the core values of the brand as the process progresses (refer to the 4 keywords). Provide evidence to support your choices.

Practice Skill:
Choose a famous logo to recreate by manipulating basic shapes using pathfinder and the rotate tool in illustrator.

STEP 3
Exploration:
This phase involves seeking inspiration–often in unlikely places. Gather images from various historical, cultural, and contemporary sources to build a collection of references to draw from.

Sketching begins:
This involves exploring different symbols and letter forms and in as many variations of each other as possible. Creating many iterations not only nudges an idea into a new, meaningful direction, but allows it to go the distance.
Client Feedback:

STEP 4
Digitize the Design:
Offer at least three ideas to your client, they will appreciate the variety. Create multiple artboards; one for each idea. Use a 1 inch grid to work on so comparisons can be made as changes are occur. Also, this will document the creative process and allow the client to see how much work has gone into their design. STEP 5
Feedback and Review:
Peer critique and client feedback
How to offer input during a critique can be tricky but take a look at some really good logos and what happens when they were rebranded poorly. Some of the same mistakes can be made when designing from scratch.

10 Best Logo Redesign WINS

STEP 6
Presentation:
This is where designers must present their best work to their client. Rather than present a huge variety of concepts, for our purposes just showcase your best 2-3. Work backwards from there to unpack the logo design process. Make sure to support your choices with the evidence you found along the way. Include a visual for each step in the process to support what you are saying.

“How to present a new idea is, perhaps, one of the designer’s most difficult tasks. Everything a designer does involves presentation of some kind–not only how to explain (present) a particular design to an interested listener (client, reader, spectator), but how the design may explain itself in the marketplace…” Paul Rand

STEP 7
Celebrate:
In a survey 65% of all designers celebrate when the job is finally finished and 35% didn't because they were on to the next logo design. Suggestions?

Photoshop Starts Now !!
Below are 3 separate but related assignments. Each one builds upon the other so please do not around. Write down important steps and develop your process for extracting objects, composing scenes, and adding Titles. Turn in your work on Google Classroom. Be prepared to share your work in a presentation style format. A reminder that you also have a "How to" tutorial due as one of your Blog Post by semesters end. AND don't forget to have fun!!

How to Move Mountains...in Photoshop

To complete this task do the "Floating Mountain Tutorial" then add two additional objects of your choice and combine two fonts to make a Title for your piece.
Tips for adding text-choose one and use it to model...NO lame typography please!
Use Morgue Files for images that are usage free.
Post your final piece and written reflection following the Blog Post About Your Project instructions.

Words to pay particular attention to are:
Quick Select tool
layer
mask
blending mode
refine edge tool–and when to use
hue and saturation

How to Make Shadows...that are believable

Complete this tutorial using your choice of extracted image (pixel fringe free) and add a shadow.

Use royalty free images or one of your own.

For full credit this post must include:
  • Final object w/shadow
  • A written reflection on object extraction, pixel fringe, and casting realistic shadows. Use the vocabulary associated with each topic. This is your time to practice articulating what you have learned so use a minimum of 6 terms correctly.

Print Ready Files
Print a proof for each pattern on letter size paper, scale to fit, and turn in for the next hour to critique. Each class will determine which files meet the client needs and identify the ones that are not and why. Revisions will be made on your own time.

Print ready files will:
*be on a 24" x 24" artboard
*Lastname_RepeatPattern.pdf and Lastname_Motif.pdf
*Placed on the server in the appropriate folder
*color is 279 c, 421 c, or combination of both

Blog Post:
Discuss the scope of project, your process,
and a summary of your reflection. Guidelines

*NOTE: A radial pattern has a center point and a pattern that radiates out from the center. Notice that in the client example there are filled shapes within the pattern.
A repeat pattern  wraps around from side to side. Notice the size in client example can be viewed easily from a distance, has areas of white.

Remake Posters
Stay in the same groups but get a new guarantee to illustrate. The markers are for outlining only. Use crayon to fill with color. Be intentional about how you are working together. Look over those softskills and practice one or two of them as this is another opportunity to provide that evidence for the Performance Review at the end of the quarter. How you organize yourselves, plan out your ideas, manage your time, and communicate is golden today.  If time, go ahead and hang those up. Impress me guys!!
Oh, and have fun :)

Pattern and Motif Ceiling Tiles

Creative Boundaries:
Create one unique tile pattern and one unique motif to be alternated in the same style as the example from the Japanese ceiling found in LA. Any NEW or modified ideas can also be submitted for review as an alternative suggestion and continued exploration of this idea to be applied in other spaces.
To begin we must build on our common language and skill set by learning from a couple of the same tutorials BEFORE moving forward to extend into personal interests and then of create new and original works for the final piece.
*In addition to the creation of the unique pattern tiles, we will also be solving creatively the way in which it be be installed, including the materials it will be printed on and how gravity is defied. This piece must be professional on all levels from file management to the final display. All work must be reviewed/critiqued and then revised before submitting for print.

Remember to take "notes to self" throughout documenting the process so your reflection is not only interesting to me/audience but also meaningful to you.

Part A: The Repeat Pattern
Below are two basic pattern tutorials. The first shows you how to add a pattern and the second how to use pattern options. Locate Adobe Help for more advanced snippets, short videos, and tutorials.
Start your DESIGN VAULT today (if you haven't already) on your personal Google Drive. You can copy and paste the link to the tutorial inside the file for easy future access. You are allowed to alter the colors to match your own taste.

1. Illustrator Tutorial: Easy Chevron Pattern (CS6 and earlier)

2. Create a Japanese Pattern with Adobe Illustrator CS6

Part B: The Alternating Motif/Symbol/Logo
For this half of the challenge you must match as closely as possible the traditional look and feel of a an alternating piece using the example provided. You will have to include some historical research to justify your choices. There is no one tutorial that will show you how to do this piece. Use what you have learned using the Shape and Rotate tool, as well as the Pathfinder and Shape Builder as a base. Good Luck!!!

But What Should I Say in My Blog?

Start by jotting down a your thoughts about the topic. Writing fails when you don't have something to say and the concern becomes about a style, structure, and/or filling up the allotted space. Plus, you will find that your copy is more interesting and meaningful.
